  • Are Gourmet Salts Better For Your Health?

Are Gourmet Salts Better For Your Health?

There are an awful lot of claims being made for gourmet salt and they fall into two categories: health benefits and taste. The wide variety of tastes and textures available in gourmet salts is undeniable (more on that in a moment). The health benefits… not so much.

Many integrative medicine experts — like David B, MD and Edward Group, ND — have gone on record as saying that common table salt is empty of any nutritional value, as all the valuable minerals have been removed in the processing. (more…)

  • Blueberries May Help Deter Diabetes!

    By Craig Weatherby

A daily smoothie containing antioxidant-rich blueberry powder increased sensitivity to insulin in people at risk for diabetes.

As a result, the researchers believe that blueberries may reduce the risk of developing the dreaded lifestyle disease, and they called for more research.

The placebo-controlled clinical trial involved people who were obese and had insulin resistance … conditions that increase the risk of developing diabetes. (more…)

  • What you need to know about the new dietary guidelines

Ever wonder how the Food Pyramid gets created?

Well sit back and relax, cause this is an interesting story.

Every five years, both the USDA and the Department of Health and Human Services are required by law to jointly update and publish the “Dietary Guidelines for Americans”. The first thing they do is to convene an expert panel (The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee) which makes recommendations based the available science.

Or at least the science they agree with. (More on that in a moment.) (more…)

  • Kombucha Tea: What’s the Real Deal?

If you’re one of the many people who takes celebrities seriously as a source of information on nutrition and fitness, you might be wondering if there’s anything to kombucha tea, the latest (but certainly not the last) trendy drink that’s reportedly loved by everyone from Lindsay Lohan to Madonna.

  • A Health Guru Dies of Cancer

Last week, I wrote of the sad and untimely death of the great nutritionist and educator Robert Crayhon who lost his battle with colon cancer at the age of 49.

Last year, around this same time, we lost another of our greats, the nutritionist and author Shari Lieberman, who died at 51 of breast cancer.

Both of these wonderful people were in amazing health. Both of them knew all the right things to do. Both ate in the most healthy way you can imagine, both were avid exercisers, in great shape, and did all the right things when it comes to supplements, stress-reduction and detoxification.

    Yet both died of cancer.

In both cases, I received a ton of letters which all asked a variation of the same question: “How can this happen?(more…)

  • Consumers Reports on Dangerous Supplements

The September issue of Consumers Reports- the same one that famously dissed the iPhone 4 for not being able to make decent phone calls- has a cover story entitled “The 12 Most Dangerous Supplements”.

It deserves a comment or two, first about Consumers Reports in general, second about the specifics of the article. (more…)

  • Media Culpa: More Low-Fat Lies (Part Two)

Last week I told you about a study that got a ton of press in the media, a study that concluded that animal-based low-carb diets were associated with greater rates of death over time than vegetable-based low-carb diets.

In the intervening week, I’ve had a chance to interview Dr. Teresa Fung, the lead author of the study, and I’ve also had a chance to read some of the scathing reviews of the study posted on the blogosphere (linked below). (more…)

  • Robert Crayhon: 1961-2010

On Saturday, September 4, 2010, the world of nutrition and integrative health lost a giant figure.

On that day, Robert Crayhon lost his battle with cancer. He was 49.

Let me tell you something about Robert, and why I’m writing about him in this newsletter. (more…)
