What Is Nutritional Healing?

Western medicine is great in an emergency.

I’ve often said that if- God forbid- I’m in a car crash, don’t take me to an herbalist. I want to go straight to the emergency room at Cedars Sinai.

As good as Western medicine may be at keeping us alive in life and death situations, it doesn’t do a very good job of keeping us healthy and out of the doctor’s office in the first place.

In fact, what’s often referred to as “health care” should be more properly termed “sickness care.”

That’s where nutritional healing comes in.

Remember, depression is not a Prozac deficiency. Heart disease doesn’t happen because of a lack of Lipitor in the diet.

If you give the body what it needs, it will do a remarkable job of making the very compounds necessary to heal itself- or even better, it will make the biochemicals needed to keep us from getting “diseases” in the first place.

Now don’t get me wrong- I’m not saying every disease is caused by bad nutrition, nor that every disease can be cured by “natural” means.

But I am saying that the right choices- in foods, lifestyle and nutritional supplements- can always make things better.

And sometimes, they can prevent bad things from happening altogether.

That’s what “nutritional healing” is all about.

Nutritional healing doesn’t mean there isn’t ever a place for pharmaceutical drugs; no one would deny that such drugs have sometimes saved lives and I for one am glad they’re available.

But, I’d like to take as few of them as humanly possible, and I think they should be a last resort- not the first thing you reach for.

My site, Jonny Bowden, is filled with newsletters, audio programs, DVDs, CDs and e-books about what nutrition can do for your life. You’ll discover how to use nutrition- food and supplements- for healing, health and prevention. And you’ll find out how to keep yourself from becoming a medical statistic.
