I work with a man who is 60 and diabetic and has had hip surgery and therefore has a lot of pain and inflammation. He claims his doctor told him no oil (such as Omega 3s, 6s, etc) because of his diabetes. Mind you the guy orders a giant plate of pasta and fried onion rings when we go out to lunch. It seems like this advice on Omega oils is wrong. What say you?

Hi Deb

this kind of "medical' advice simply makes my blood boil. Truthfully? You should sincerely, gently, firmly suggest in your kindest voice that he change doctors. This is beyond the pale and even for someone who hasn't read anything in the literature for the last ten years..

Hi Jonny,

What would you say to someone who tried using coconut oil but had a rather runny side effect from it? Is this common?
Thanks,
Kelly

Want some bad advise? Look at this!

http://ihealthbulletin.com/blog/2009/02/06/omega-6-anti-inflammatory/

Now I do appreciate that the American Heart Association shows some conflicting evidence against the whole "blame omega 6 idea", but then they top it off with some unscientific and possibly harmful advise.

Is there any evidence that EATING omega 6 is inflammatory? Or is the AHA right in that is just an assumed "fact". (Just like the harmfulness of cholesterol by the way, but you don't see them busting that myth)

Thanks

PS: If you can, please put a link/name of a study that shows this in your answer.

Eating omega 6 isn't necessarily inflammatory. The problem is the ratio of omega 6 to omega 3. Omega 6's are fine when they're in the right ratio to omega-3: i.e. somewhere between 4:1 (omega 6: omega 3) to (in my opinion even better) 1:1.

We consume conservatively 15:1 and by some estimates 20:1 or even higher. That's the problem not the omega 6 by itself.
